It is the policy Rockdale Medical Center to ensure the nursing staff is competent in providing safe and quality patient care. A nurse’s competency level will be evaluated when seeking employment, and evaluation criteria have been designed by specific nursing department management accordingly.

When an applicant is scheduled for an interview, he/she will be informed that a medication calculation examination will be administered during the interview process. In units where applicable, an ECG rhythm strip test (ICU, ED, PACU, CDU, Cath Lab) and fetal heart rate monitoring test (Labor & Delivery) will also be given. A passing grade of 80% must be obtained for the examination(s) to be eligible for employment. If the nursing applicant is unsuccessful in obtaining a passing score for the test(s) upon the first attempt, he/she is not eligible for the re-hire process until six (6) months from the initial testing date.

If the applicant is a recent nursing graduate, a medication examination specific for recent graduates will be required upon hire with a passing score of 80%. A passing score must be achieved on any medication administration examination prior to administering medications to patients.

Clinical nursing staff will demonstrate competency in medication administration through direct observation, and departmental-based competency will be documented on an orientation skills checklist by a preceptor during department-based nursing orientation.
